Triton Square

A new development of open space just north west of Warren Street tube station. Prominently hard materials with a very open central space. Trees and a lawns reflect and balance the middle space from the north and south. This place i find more fascinating when it gets dark. The elevated trees in this risen bed are a bold feature, dominating the space. Personally i feel they are too seperate to the public space below, they may provide pleasant greenery throughout most of the year but i am drawn towards features within a space that you can be amongst, touch and be around. These trees are on a seperate horizontal level.
Lighting strips in the ground are encouraged to inform movement through the space, however they werent on during my visit.

Mile End Park

In East central London Mile end park was once seen as a series of green spaces, however it has now been re-designed and developed into a more continuous green corridor providing this multi-cultural area with a space for activity and nature.

The skatepark is at the extreme southern end of the park, it is a well designed skatepark.

These adult exercise machines are great, really strenuous
This bridge allows the green space to flow over the busy road beneath, with trees, grass, paths and benches continuing the space. Ths is a unique feature to Mile End Park and has been key to creating a more effiiciently used park.

Isometric of Bench - Scale 1:20 at A3

Model at Scale 1:10

Saturday, 23 January 2010

The whole square has been designed with a strong geometric lighting grid flush with the paving, these light lines are contained within the boundary of a square apart from where the benches sit close the lines of light break from the edge and cut through the benches, the Glass panels extruding through the bench support the design and bring the lines of light out of the ground. This allows the lighting beneath the ground to illuminate the surrounding area and light the bench. At night the effect is very strong.

'Finsbury Avenue Square' Bench

New Studio Project: Detail

''To create something exceptional, your mindset must be relentlessly focused on the smallest detail.'' - Giorgio Armani.
The aim of this project was for us to explore the detail within landscape architecture, to get close to things and really study, whether it be the stone texture of a wall or the design of a seat that makes a project individual. Working in a pair me and Aaron Carpenter found the Benches at Finsbury Avenue square (Central London, square designed by Townshend, lighting by Maurice brill) to be unique features and began to explore the construction of a single bench through using a model.
